History of kayak polo in Germany

We start the week with a new country, prominent in the sport: Germany!

Germany has historically been one of the pioneers and forerunners of kayak polo.

In 1926 the Deutschen Kanu-Verband (DKV) develops Kanupolo and its regulations, first practiced with folding kayaks and later wood 4 feet long.

The play area was 99-120 m long x 50-90 m wide, the goals on water: 4 m wide x 1.5 m high.

Formed teams of 11 players and the games were 2 periods of 45 minutes. This first version of kayak polo was a hybrid between football and water polo.

The first games were held in 1927 in Hamburg. The water sports club Hamburg Police was in charge of organizing the event.

Later some rules change the game more like the one we know today. The playground became 60-90 m long x 40-60 m wide were modified, teams were composed of 5 players and played 2 halves of 30 minutes.

In 1928, the first German Championship was held in Potsdam.

The high costs of repairing boats and reak of the Second World War led to the temporary closure of the sport in 1935.
In 1987 the first exhibition tournament held at the Canoe Sprint World Championships in Duisburg.

And in 1993 was the first European Championship, where Germany is declared winner .

Germany continues in very high positions in the world ranking, currently has teams in all national categories: Women and men, senior and U-21. And with the best results in all of them. Continue to report on their players and teams these days, we hope you enjoy it!
